As we are ever-increasingly bombarded with assertions overt and implied that we as free citizens may not be sufficiently intelligent or able to determine our own destinies, and those of our fellows, perhaps we should return to the well and examine the thinking of one who went before. Controversial even in his day, Essayist Lysander Spooner examined eloquently and in detail why free persons, to remain free, must demand, retain and exercise their full powers as jurors. In this essay he examines in detail the interplay of relative powers of judges and common law jurors. An Essay on the Trial by Jury, Lysander Spooner
Military-Industrial
Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
In this farewell speech President Eisenhower issued warning
concerning the peril to our freedoms which arises from our need for an
expanding military and industrial might:
This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms
industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic,
political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every
office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this
development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our
toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our
society. Read

SOMETHING TO PONDER...
Judges Elected? Thirty-one states elect their judges. The rest appoint
them, including Iowa. In a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court decision
(Republican Party of Minnesota v. White), the Court ruled that Minnesota (an
election state) could not limit certain speech by a judicial candidate. Some
Justices imply that the manner of selection is a matter of state choice
and that Minnesota could change this by amending its Constitution. How would
that correlate with Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment, not under
consideration in that case? Doesnt Section 2 require that for a state to have
continued representation in the Congress that the right to vote at any election
for its judicial officers shall not be denied? Ponder: Is Iowa, along with 18
other states, at serious risk of losing representation in Congress in the manner
in which their state judges are seated on the bench?
THE FOUNDERS CONSTITUTION. Hailed as "the Oxford English Dictionary of American constitutional history," the print edition of The Founders' Constitution has proved since its publication in 1986 to be an invaluable aid to all those seeking a deeper understanding of one of our nation's most important legal documents.

IOWA ATHLETES
Bob Feller, Van Meter, Iowa. Member of the BASEBALL HALL OF FAME who set MAJOR LEAGUE RECORDS while a PITCHER for the CLEVELAND INDIANS.
Dan Gable, Waterloo, Iowa. Sometimes called the BABE RUTH of wrestling.
Frank Gotch, Humbolt, Iowa. Wrestled the WORLD CHAMPION WRESTLER, the RUSSIAN LION, George Hackenschmidt in 1908 to win the WRESTLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Until his death in 1918, Gotch NEVER LOST A FALL, much less a match. He toured the United States and Canada meeting all comers, agreeing to throw them inside of 15 minutes or forfeit $100.00. Few, if any, collected.
SHAWN
JOHNSON, West Des Moines, ably competed in the 2008 Beijing Summer
Olympics, winning one Gold and three Silver Medals in Womens Gymnastics,
and capturing the hearts of people all over the world with her winning smile
and determination.
LOLO JONES, a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, (born 5
August 1982) is an American track and field athlete. She won three NCAA
titles and garnered 11 All-American honors while at LSU. She won indoor
national titles in 2007 and 2008 in the 60m hurdles, and won her first world
championship in 2008 in the same event. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Lolo
was favored to win the 100 meter hurdles. In the final, she was pulling away
from the pack when she clipped the 9th hurdle (of 10) and stumbled, breaking
stride to drop her back to a disappointing 7th-place finish. The mistake has
been compared numerous times to Gail Devers' famous fall in the same event
at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. What is noteworthy about Lolo are the
obstacles she cleared to get to the 2008 Olympics were a lot more formidable
than one 33-inch barriers she clipped.

JESSI WINCHESTER, Webster City,
author of From Bordello to Ballot Box, A First-hand Account of Legal
Prostitution and Political Corruption. Jessi wrote the book not as an expose',
but rather to inspire others who feel trapped by society's judgment to be all
they can be despite the obstacles they must overcome - and to show it can be
done. Jessi finished second in the primary election for U.S. House of
Representatives, and placed third in a field of nine for Lieutenant Governor
of Nevada. She is a prolific writer voicing thoughtful, meaningful commentary
on corruption in government, published nationally. On September 28, 2001,
immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Jessi wrote a column and in it
she relates the dangers our liberty faces with passage of portions of the
Patriot Act. Jessi does not claim to be a seer or prophet but she
forecasted what the news would be in the future if that legislation was
passed, and she relied on history to make her intuitive and insightful points.
The threats to American liberty that Jessi anticipated in 2001 to result from
the Patriot Act became daily national and international news from then and
right through 2005. Go to:

The Burlington Zephyr run from Denver to the Chicago World's
Fair -
The Independent
"A train unlike anything ever seen on rails pulled out of Denver's Union Station at dawn on May 26, 1934, and raced eastward . . . .
The goal was to make the longest and swiftest land run in history -- destination Chicago by nightfall. To achieve that goal, the train would have to cover 1,015 miles in less than 15 hours, requiring an average speed of nearly 70 miles per hour. But the first leg of the trip would require a breaking-in period that would hold the speed to 50 mph. Time would have to be made up on the remainder of the route."
Museum of Science and
Industry.
"Passenger traffic along the entire route was sidetracked. Freight trains also were tied up. Switches were spiked to prevent tampering. At each station, where crowds were gathered to see the silver king of transportation speed through, the track was guarded by local law officers, posts of the American Legion and Boy Scouts."

Taylor County, Blockton, Iowa. Stories of Early History. From Mrs. Ledgerwoods Story, In the early days they did not have matches just flint rock and tow to make a fire. In April one year the fire went out so mother sent my sister and I to a neighbors to get some fire. My sister fell and spilled the fire in the dry grass and then we had to do some running. The fire we set was terrible as everything was dry and the grass was four or five feet high, and a high wind was blowing. (about 1853).

Mormons in Iowa
Along the Mormon Trail In 1846 the PITT BRASS BAND was traveling with the Brigham Young Party and was invited to play for the locals in Keosauqua when they stopped. They played concerts by the Van Buren County Courthouse, which is still in use today. 15,000 people passed through in one year. It was required that they have certain supplies. See the list.
The most famous of all Latter-day hymns, Come, Come, Ye Saints, was written by William Clayton on the banks of Locust Creek near what is now Corydon, April 15, 1846. Brigham Young succeeded Joseph Smith as leader in Council Bluffs in 1847.

Who was this man, Chief Keokuk? Judge J.M. Casey wrote of him:
"While Keokuk
was not a Lee County man, I have often seen him here. He was an
individual of distinguished mark; once seen would always be remembered. It was
not necessary to be told that he was a chief, you would at once recognize him as
such, and stop to admire his deportment. But it is a conceded fact, by all the early settlers who know
him, that Keokuk possessed, in a prominent degree, the elements of
greatness"

Sometime during the night of June 9, 1912 a
killer or killers unknown, entered the home of Josiah B. Moore. Bludgeoned to
death were Joe, his wife Sara, their four children and two neighbor girls, Lena
